Zambia defeat Uganda 14-12 to win Barthes Cup group 1C in a do or die finale of the group at Kyadondo rugby club on Sunday afternoon.
Zambia scored one try through George Bwalya and three penalties from Mwanza Mwimba against Kinyai’s four penalties for Uganda, on the road to the Barthes Cup win.
Zambia dominated the game from the kick off whistle and were soon rewarded with a penalty, expertly taken by Mwanza Mwimba. Uganda tried to fight back but lack of grit finish in the final third proved their undoing and soon, George Mwimba received a ball out on the wing, kicked ahead of his defender and collected to score Zambia’s try and the only try of the game. Mwanza failed to add the extras but another penalty gave Zambia a commanding 11-00 lead into the break.
After the break, Uganda had learnt their lesson and came back ready to attack their Southern African counterparts and were soon believing again when Richard Kinyai, who missed a plethora of kicks in the first half found his footing and kicked in four penalties to give Uganda a 12-11 lead for the first time in the game. With only a minute left on the clock, Olweny of Uganda was sent to the bin, and Zambia awarded a penalty at the half way line. Mwimba stepped up and did what he had been doing the whole day and put Zambia back up 14-12.
Zambia’s Elisha Bwalya was named man of the match and he recounted, “I have played for mother Zambia and I am happy I am going back home with a win.”
