The rugby edition of the East African University Games 2018 will be kicking off any moment from now, with two representatives from Uganda. It is no surprise that Makerere University Kampala and Kyambogo university are the country’s flag bearers in what is a three horse race, the third being USIU from Kenya.

The games will be in a round robin nature with all teams getting a chance to play the other  to accumulate as many points as possible. Then the top two will face themselves in a grand finale to see who takes gold.

The Ugandan contingent has carried a wealth of experience for this sevens competition showing all seriousness to claim top position and East African bragging rights despite the fact that attendance of teams remains disappointingly low.

The Makerere camp led by captain Amos Asimile has a strong core of Impis players with the vast experience of Henry Nsekuye looking to be quite the asset having won at this stage and will provide the guidance the younger players need to perform at this level.

Having gone through their paces for the last two months, the Makerere side is more than ready to come home with nothing short of gold from Tanzania; the full Makerere rugby team at the EAUG 2018 games is Asimile Amos(C), Weraga keith, Aniku David, Asiimwe Happy, Ali Masembe Hyder, Muheire Enock, Ssedyabane Emmanuel, Muheire Spencer, Nsekuye Henry, Luhoni Jonathan, Waya Edmund, Ssemakula Mark.

In Makerere’s path lies a rival that knows them so well in Kyambogo university; looking at the rugby contingent from KYU shows that no one is taking this as a mere holiday trip. Experience all the way from management to player base. Coach Ivan Makmot of the DusuPay Warriors was given leave to go and guide an institute he played for and now has the honor to lead from the dugout.

The Kyambogo player base comprises a blend of Uganda’s top clubs with picks from Rhinos, Warriors and Kobs – Ayebare Blair,  Allan Omoding, Alhaji Manano, Cosmas Odur, David Otwi, Egwaru Isaac, Phillip Muhoozi, Aisu Moses, Simon Nyeko, Daniel Buule, Samuel Odinga, Ogwang Joshua and Epilo Paul.
