Uganda 7s back in training ahead of Africa 7s

The 2016 and 2017 Double Africa 7s champions, Uganda, are back in training ahead of this year’s showpiece happening  in November in South Africa.

The 2019 Africa 7s will double as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Qualifier.  Uganda were back-to-back Africa 7s champions in 2016 and 2017 but finished last year’s competition held in Tunisia in third position, having beaten Madagascar 24-19 in the third place playoff thanks to a late Kasito Adrian try.

14 teams will take part in this year’s contest and these are   Zimbabwe (2018 champions) , Kenya, Uganda, Madagascar, Zambia, Tunisia, Senegal, Morocco, Namibia, Ghana, Botswana, Mauritius, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria.

A host of Ugandan have been invited into the team to get ready for the contest and possibly take Uganda to the Olympics, including names previously seen  over a year ago in international action. Lawrence Ssebuliba, Solomon Okia and James Odongo, all who got injured in the 2018 international season  have made the team in training. Ssebuliba has been continuing his rehabilitation with 2019 Premiership Champions Hima Cement Heathens and recently made a competitive comeback at the final 7s edition, Kitaka 7s. Solomon Okia  has also rehabilitated well and featured for Kenya side Harlequins in the Driftwood 7s.

Kevin Kermundu, fresh from his US tour, has made the extended team, alongside Heathens player of the year Paul Epillo.   2019 National 7s top scorer Okeny Norbert has also made the team, alongside MVP Pius Ogena, all from the Betway Kobs, 2019 Roke 7s Champions.

Justin Kimono, who made the cut to the Hong Kong 7s is set to miss out.
