Rugby Africa: Solomon Okia, Chris Lubanga and Arthur Mpande train with extended Cranes squad

With the Rugby 7s World Cup out the way, all eyes are now back to the Rugby Africa Gold Cup. The national 7s circuit will as well be put on hold, with the nation’s focus on saving face in the Gold Cup. The Gold Cup has been off since 7th July and will return this weekend with two games.

Uganda sit bottom of the log which consists of six teams. To change this feat, Coach John Duncan and his technical staff have summoned 35 stars from whom they will select the 23 man team to face off with Tunisia this weekend at Kyadondo Rugby Club.

Solomon Okia who is contracted to Kenyan outift Kenya Harlequins, and is yet to feature for the 15s this year headlines the new names on the roster. Okia came off the bench last year to score against Tunisia. Okia’s inclusion makes 10 out of 12 San Francisco stars to make the roster this year. Only Timothy Kisiga and Desire Ayera fail to make the roster from the Rugby Sevens World Cup team.

Hima Cement Heathens old guard of Chris Lubanga and Gamma Faisal have been summoned too, alongside Joseph Oyet, Arthur Mukama and Santos Ssenteza. Ian Munyani, Musa Muwonge and Eric Mulla who were droped from the team that made the journey to Kenya for Uganda’s Second Gold Cup game have been recalled into the extended squad.

Arthur Mpande makes his return to the team too, while Ronald Musajja and Marvin Odong miss out. The latter sustained a nasty injury in Kenya and will be out for a while.

Almost all Ugandan stars who feature in Kenya have been summoned i.e. Phillip Wokorach, Pius Ogena, Asuman Mugerwa and Eliphaz Emong from Kabras Sugar, Aaron Ofoiwroth and Solomon Okia from Kenya Harlequins, James Odong from Nondescripts.
