Uganda 7s superstars and African champions Solomon Okia and Pius Ogena are very much likely going to miss the team’s conquest in Hong Kong, as the team tussles it out to become a core team.
Solomon Okia picked up an injury in the Kenya Cup late last year and underwent surgery this week, while Pius Ogena hasn’t played Rugby since Kobs chaotic win over the Warriors in January.
Pius Ogena has however been in light training, and also involved in session with the physio as he aims to regain full fitness but he has not been involved in any contact rugby training as the medical makes sure he returns at 100%. His injury has had recurring behavior and it is probably why he won’t be rushed into hectic action. Pius Ogena and Solomon Okia join Lawrence Ssebuliba and James Odongo on the sidelines among the notable absentees.
“A couple of boys have put their hands up,” said Coach Tolbert about the possibility of introducing young guns to provide cover.
“Some of them did safari 7s and are now here permanently with us like Norbert Okeny. Conrad Mukwaya has been so good on the wing for Kobs this season and he is here with us too. Not to mention Romano Ucu of Buffaloes and Timothy Odong, the big lad from Pirates.”
“It is a big opportunity to play as a Core team and it will open up doors. It will be life changing if it happens. Some boys could even get pro rugby contracts and you may see some of us deciding to play rugby full time,” remarked Captain Michael Wokorach.
Hong Kong 7s will happen from 5th April to 7th April.
