The Samurai Rugby team to play in the 2018 Edition of the Safari 7s has been named and it features Ugandan speedster and top try scorer in Dubai 2017, Solomon Okia.
This inclusion comes in the wake of a glamorous ending to Uganda’s Gold Cup campaign where he scored brilliant tries against Tunisia and Morocco. The sprinter went forth to feature for the Rugby 7s in San Francisco at the Rugby Sevens World Cup and recently concluded Africa 7s. In the last leg of the Stanbic Bank National Sevens Series at the RFUEA Grounds, Solomon Okia was voted Most Valuable Players after helping his Kenya Harlequins contingent make it to the final, which they lost to Homeboyz.
Okia joins 14 other superstars from four other nationalities. There are six Kenyans named in the team i.e Patrice Agunda and Frank Lawrence from Kenya Harlequins, Tony Owuor from Mwamba, Oscar Dennis of Nondies, Augustine Lugonzo of Homeboyz and Oscar Ouma from Top Fry Nakuru.
Just like Kenya, there are Six South Africans in the Samurai squad namely: Pieter Uys of Blue Bulls, Kurt Lee of the Asia Pacific Dragons, Western Province trio of Ruan Mostert, Josh Bassingthwaitghe and Braam Venter and Angus van Niekerk of the SA Select 7s.
The other Samurai are Englishman James Adamson of Newcastle Falcons and Hugo Stiles from Hong Kong 7s who plies his professional trade with Bath.
“We have had a few challenges getting the team together this year but we are just about there now so we are really looking forward to our visit. The atmosphere at the Safari 7s is something special, and the level of competition seems to increase each year,” said Coach Wakley to RagaHouse.
The squad of 15 will have to be trimmed to 13 ahead of this weekend’s Safari 7s feat. Samurai won the 2015 edition of the Samurai 7s beating hosts Kenya 20-19.
Solomon Okia will be other Ugandan after Philip Wokorach to feature for the invitational superstar side. Philip’s most recent outing with the Samurai was the Algarve 7s and Amsterdam 7s leading up to the 2018 Gold Cup. Philip was awarded Most Valuable Players on the back of 5 tries in Amsterdam.
