Coming off the back of Henry Rujumba Memorial Rugby circuit, Kampala Rugby Club aka Legends will play host to another edition of the Guinness Sponsored 7s this weekend in conjuction with the Shell Rimula Rhinos. This specific edition will also double as the celebration of the silver Jubilee of the Coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II of Buganda.
Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi will be marking 25 years on Buganda’s throne and among the events lined up to celebrate this milestone is the Rugby Sevens circuit. Other events include a golf tournamnet which is going to be used as a front to sensitize the youth about sickle cell disease.
Pirates 7s kings, the Toyota Buffaloes, have been drawn against Legends side Warriors, Jinja Hippos and an invitational side in Boks. Boks happen to be the second string side of the Betway Kobs. Buffaloes disposed of series leaders Pirates in the semifinals before stunning James Ijongat’s Kobs in the final. Jinja Hippos had a brilliant run in the Jinja 7s but have since struggled to find form. Warriors are a team with lots of potential but with a few big egos in their, nothing seems to be working for them as yet.
Betway Kobs, the series runners up thus far lead the fray in the second group. Kobs had a chance to cut slim the gap between them and Leaders Pirates but after losing to Buffaloes in the finals, the latter burst into contention for the ultimate prize with the series coming to the business end. Kobs are drawn against perennial rival, Hima Cement Heathens, with whom they faced ast weekend in the semifinals. Kobs got the better of Heathens despite a humongous shift for classic Bishop Onen. The hosts, Shell Rimula Rhinos, are the other team in this group alongside Stallions. The Rhinos are yet to spring to life but shall hope to come alive when they host this weekend.
Series leaders, and double Uganda Cup and Premiership champions, Black Pirates lead the pack in group C. The Legends side are yet to win any circuit after June having been ejected at the semifinals both in Mbarara and in Kampala last weekend. They were ejected by Rams in Mbarara and Buffaloes last weekend. With the gap between them and the chasing pack narrowing, Pirates will need to tighten their bolts first against Rams, Mongers and Stallions in the group stages.
The ladies will provide another spectacle of rugby this weekend as Entebbe Ladies look to dethrone Black Pearls. Black Panther and Thunderbirds have had lukewarm performances.
