Rassie Erasmus Speaks out on Etzebeth Injury and Adjustments to the Line Up

Springboks head coach, Rassie Erasmus on Monday addressed media in Paris ahead of the Test game against France where he addressed the concern to Eben Etzebeth’s injury.

The South African lock suffered a foot injury during the second half of last weekend’s Test against England. Rassie made an initial statement on the condition of Eben in a post match press conference where he said, “out definitely for next week and maybe the tour”, adding “the way he is walking doesn’t look great… and will be a while before he is playing again.”

However in the Monday press statement, Rassie changed his stand on the condition of the lock saying, “The injury is not as bad as we initially thought and we will give Eben time until Tuesday to prove his fitness.” It seems to be, Eben does have a chance to be considered for this weekend’s test against France.

Also addressed in the press statement in Paris on Monday was the return of the international team players. Faf de Klerk (scrumhalf), Vincent Koch (prop), Cheslin Kolbe (utility back), Francois Louis (flanker), Willie le Roux (full back) and Franco Mostert (lock) who did not play the last test against England are back to join their national side. The named internationals missed the last Test as it fell outside the designated official international window and still owed to duty to their clubs then.

Erasmus mentioned they joined the Springboks in France on Monday evening and are now available for selection on the squad to face France. He remarked on their return, “They bring along some valuable experience and knowledge of the European conditions and we are looking forward to working with them again. All of them will be available for selection for this weekend.”

Kolisi and his team have had intense training in preparation for the upcoming game as they wait for Rassie to announce to announce the chosen Springbok line up for the weekend on Thursday.
