Uganda’s shot stopper Denis Masinde Onyango was in the posts as Mamelodi Sundowns edged Wydad Casablanca 2-1 in the CAF Champions League on Saturday at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Despite his failure to keep a clean sheet, Onyango played a pivotal role to keep out Wydad on various occasions.
Onyango, in the 90th minute was slammed into the advertising boards by a Wydad player who accused him of time wasting.
This was Onyango’s first champions League group game for Mamelodi this season after missing the opener against Lobi Stars, coincidentally, the team lost against the Nigerian opponents.
Themba Zwane scored the opener for Mamelodi in the seventh minute before getting his brace and what proved to be the winner later on after Mohammed Nuhir had beaten Onyango at the other end.
The result however, leaves Sundowns in second position below leaders Wydad in a tight group A that has all the four teams on three points.
Next for Mamelodi in group A will be a home tie against Ivory Coast’s ASEC Memosa on February 2.
Elsewhere, Congolese giants AS Vita obliterated Simba 5-0 at home to record their first victory on Saturday.
Jean-Marc Makusu (2) Fabrice Ngoma, Bompunga Botuli and Kupa Makwewke were on target against Emmanuel Okwi and Murushid Jjuuko’s Simba SC.
