Ugandan University rugby side from Mbarara University of Science and Technology have been invited to take part in the rugby sevens event of the Genocide Memorial Tournament (GMT) in Rwanda.
This will be the sixth edition of the tournament which is held to commemorate the gruesome events of the 1994 genocide that happened in Rwanda. This year’s edition will be hosted at Rwanda’s Amahoro Stadium on 23rd June 2018.
The Rugby sevens tournament will feature four more teams than last year’s eight, bringing the total number to twelve. There are two invited side i.e Mbarara University Rugby Club from Uganda and the Okapi Wanderers from Goma, DRC. The other 10 teams are all local and include reigning champions Thousand Hills, Remera Buffaloes, Muhanga, Kigali Sharks, Resilience, UR Grizzlies, Puma Kamonyi, Lion de Fer IPRC Kigali and Tumba College.
Mbarara University lost last years’s final 13-12 to Thousand Hills. The same tournament was won by Uganda side Jinja Hippos in 2015.
