Rugby Uganda: Kobs to remember Kitaka over two-day rugby circuit

Thirteen years on from his passing, Edward Kizito Kitaka is a name that resonates so much with rugby folk, especially those that subscribe religiously to Betway Kobs and Black Pirates, and the former are hosting the Kitaka Sevens this weekend at Legends Rugby Club in memoriam of their late chairperson.

Edward Kitaka is widely credited for growing the game in the country rapidly from his time at Makerere University having featured for Lumumba Hall. He is a founding member of the URU in 1988, having been a secretary himself. His playing time was cut short due to a knee injury but he went forth to manage the national 7s and 15s teams on several occasions. He was a cog in the formation of Black Pirates in 1996 and 1997 before he served as Club Chairman for now Betway Kobs in 2000 to 2003. He was announced dead on 5th January, 2005: news which was met with tears all over the country.

Ranked first, the Pirates, in line to win their first National circuit, are pitted against Kyadondo side Heathens, Jinja runners Hippos and the Sailors. With a 17 point gap between them and the next team on the log, Kobs, an appearance at the finals should be enough for the Pirates to claim the National 7s while a victory for Buffaloes or Kobs will make the Coronation 7s champions wait a little longer, for Floodlight rugby 7s.

Pool B has the hosts and Mbarara 7s champions, Betway Kobs, alongside another Legends side, Warriors. The group is completed by Entebbe side Plascon Mongers and B-League invitational side, Boks.

Pool C has a cocktail of stubborn sides in Rujumba 7s winners and 2014 champions Buffaloes, Legends outfit Shell Rimula Rhinos, Mbarara 7s runners up Rams and Kyadondo side Stallions.

The Black Pearls were already confirmed as winners of the National 7s circuit but the ladies have been kind enough to accept and play a number of exhibition games to celebrate the memory of Kitaka this weekend.

The Kitaka 7s circuit is going to be played over two days with each team expected to play at least a game on Friday evening (24th August, 2018) starting at 6pm and catch with the rest of the action on Saturday (25th August) starting at 2pm in the afternoon. It is going to be the first experience revelers will have with rugby under floodlights in anticipation of the final national 7s circuit dubbed “Floodlight 7s” to take place at Kyadondo Rugby Club on 1st September.
