The Betway Kobs beat the Black Pirates 21-14 in the final of the Uganda Cup at Legends Rugby Grounds on Saturday to win the Uganda Cup for the seventh time in their history.
From the team that beat Heathens, Coach Fred Mudoola dropped the experience of Joseph Aredo and Timothy Mudoola to the bench, introducing the returning Oscar Kalyango to partner with Ian Munyani in the midfield. Pius Ogena started as flanker alongside Brian Asaba and Ronald Musajja to complete the backrow. Ijongat James returned to his favored first five-eighth from wing last weekend, as Ivan Kirabo occupied scrumhalf with Davis Kiwalabye dropped of the match day 23.
Kobs fell behind in the first period thanks to Joel Anguyo’s boot which nailed two penalties. Kobs were able to draw one penalty back reducing the margin in the half to 06-03. Jospeh Aredo was introduced early in the place of Conrad Mukwaya. This meant that Adrian Kasito would go to the wing to tak up Mukwaya’s place while Aredo settled in calmly at full back.
After the break, Pirates were again through with Anguyo’s penalty plus a Musa Muwonge try. At this point, the Kobs technical bench introduced the immense experience of Victor Wadia, Timothy Mudoola, Byabasheija and Roger Rukundo. Ijongat was withdrawn for Edgar Seruwagi as he sustained an injury around the chest cavity. Kasito switched to scrum half, sending Ivan Kirabo to fly-half. Edgar Seruwagi occupied wing.
Byabasheija, Timothy and Rukundo brought fresh push to the pack of the Blue Army and not before long, a maul saw Adnan Mutebi go over the white for Kobs first try. they continued to deny Pirates runners the ball and as the game grew old on time, Kobs found themselves on the front foot thanks to their forwards. Adrian Kasito escaped on the short side and dotted down for Kobs second try, with 10 minutes on the clock to bring the game with a point, at 14-13. Adrian Kasito, cool as a cucumber, slotted in the kick as Kobs substitute kicker. Two more penalties were awarded to Kobs in the last 8 minutes and up stepped Adrian to hammer the last nail in the coffin to sink Pirates.
With 13 points in as many minutes, Adrian was awarded Man of the Match honors.
