The second clash of a two week double thriller that began last week takes place tomorrow, the first was an action packed match between Heathens and Pirates and this weekend – the Lions cup is upon us ; the Betway Kobs who now sit top of the table host the unbeaten Hima cement Heathens that dwell in second on points difference.
The last time these two sides met, they displayed a story of two halves – the Kobs exerting ruthless dominance early on and going 12 points up and the Heathens coming back to own their house with 15 points in the second half to get the win.
That loss at Kyadondo must be deeply engraved in the minds of the Kobs camp who will be fully aware that this is more than just a game for them – a chance to exorcise the demons imposed on them by their bogey side who more often than not get the better of them when it matters, it will also be an opportunity to claim sweet revenge and extend their lead atop the table.
This kind of Lions cup script could only have been written in Hollywood because a lot is at stake – as mentioned last week, a win for Heathens would strongly place the title in their hands while the Kobs need this one to consolidate their place at the top with a Pirates clash awaiting around the corner. This victory can make or break both teams’ title aspirations.
From a tactical point of view, the battle among the forwards and the territorial chess are anticipated to set the pace; both teams have possessed bullish packs that have given them a platform to launch their offensive game and put their backs on a front foot – whoever wins the physical and set piece battles will give their team the upper hand.
Despite that most of the business will happen in the scrum, the backs have a very crucial role to play too – kicking is going to be a very crucial aspect for both teams; finding the right territory kicking techniques to put the opposition under pressure and set up the forwards to express themselves. Kicking for goal will be key; it has become norm that big games are decided by “men of steel” that are able to hold their nerve under all the pressure to slot the all important kicks as shown by Simon Okwera against Pirates.
It’s close to a no brainer on who will be Heathens first choice kicker as the Kobs will need Joseph Aredo, Adrian Kasito and James Ijongat to show up to the party – who gets to be first pick is also key.
The green machine will be comfortable with a short game plan within the contact areas and it is highly likely that Gerald Ssewankambo a.k.a “Kasoto” will feature in the number 12 shirt to play the extra forward role.
Kobs on the other hand will want to spice up their forwards play with surprise cameos out wide and for that reason James Ijongat’s distribution will be key as well as the foresight of Ian Munyani to release the outside backs in Joseph Aredo and Justin Kimono.
