Rugby Uganda: Kitaka 7s Day 1 : Pirates, Rhinos, Buffaloes and Kobs at 100%

The second last 7s circuit in the country kicked off on Friday evening with all twelve participating teams playing two games before the second day.

Pirates, in search for their first ever National 7s crown and a possible local treble, opened the floodgates (literally) when they ran over B-League side Sailors winning 35-00. William Nkore scored the first try of the Kitaka 7s, after hitting a gap and putting on the afterburners. Haruna Muhammed and Isaac Massa joined in on the fun.

Pirates faced Heathens later on in the night and the latter actually got on the score board first, blowing the game’s coldness out of Pirates. The sea robbers were back in it almost instantly and went on to score four tries in total, against Heathens’ 2. Pirates beat Heathens for the nth time this season, winning 26-12.

The circuit’s hosts and back-to-back National 7s champions, Betway Kobs, opened their Kitaka account with a hard-fought win against a stubborn Warriors outfit. Cyrus Wathum got two tries in the opening half, while Warriors got through Joseph Aredo. James Ijongat got the other Kobs try but the boys in blue were made to work extra hard in defense to keep out Warriors. Their second game came against B-League side Boks and it ended 28-12 in favor of the Mbarara 7s champions.

The Rujumba 7s champions, Toyota Buffaloes, were the other team with a perfect evening, easing past B-League team Stallions 22-05 in their first game, and dispensing of Rams 10-00.

Action in the Kitaka memorial 7s resumes this afternoon, with two games from the lady sides before Pirates play Hippos. Knockout stages are expected to kick off after 4:30pm.
