With the Gold Cup on a pause, all eyes are on the San Francisco showpiece that is set to happen from 20th to 22nd July as the World’s best 7s rugby team square off for the coveted Rugby 7s world cup trophy.
Coach Onyango Tolbert has named his team that will represent the back-to-back Rugby Africa 7s champions this July and there is an omission we did not see coming. Alongside an injured Ssebuliba Lawrence, Joseph Aredo has been dropped in favor of newly appointed Rugby 15s vice skipper Justin Kimono.
Timothy Kisiga has impressed enough to stay in the squad, alongside his Black Pirates team mates Ivan Magomu and Desire Ayera. Kenya Harlequins duo Solomon Okia and Aaron Ofoiwroth have maintained their places in squad, as have Kabras Sugar back liners Phillip Wokorach and Pius Ogena. The team is without skipper Eric Kasiita who is pursuing his education away from the country.
The Uganda Rugby 7s have Samoa in the preliminary round, standing in the way of their World Cup main cup challenge, after which the winner of that match will take on England to determine who will make the Championship of the World Cup. The loser from the preliminary round will be seeded to participate in the Bowl Challenge, while the loser of the round of 16 tie against England will be relegated to the Challenge competition.
1. Desire Ayera, 2. Timothy Kisiga, 3. Aaron Ofoyrwoth, 4. Pius Ogena, 5. Byron Oketayot, 6. Adrian Kasito, 7. Solomon Okia, 9. James Odongo, 9 Michael Wokorach, 10. Justin Kimono, 11. Philip Wokorach, 12. Ivan Magomu
