Two of the biggest teams currently in women’s basketball and last season’s finalists will look to start the season with another show piece as JKL Dolphins entertain KCCA Leopards.
JKL Lady Dolphins are looking forward to defending their Championship and they start off the campaign against KCCA leopards. KCCA were the only team that beat Lady Dolphins last year in the regular season and in the playoffs in games that always brought out the best in either sides.
The Leopards didn’t bring in new players so we expect players like Judith Nansobya, Martha Soigi, Cynthia Irankunda to be used in the entire campaign to bring back success to the club after the trophy eluded them for the last two seasons with Dolphins winning last season while UCU walked away with it the previous season.
For the Lady Dolphins they managed to maintain the core of the championship winning team with players like Jamila Nansikombi who was the league MVP, Ritah Imanishimwe, Hope Akello, Flavia Oketcho. The duo of Stella Oyella, Muhayimina Namuwaya will be missed since they will be part of the She Crane preparing for Netball World Cup.
JKL managed to bring in 3 new players. A youngster Jane Asinde who has been a big prospect from school but featured for Magic Stormers the last couple of seasons, Maureen Atulinda from KIU Rangers who will bring in some experience from the bench and also Brenda Nakitende from A1 Challenge who is a lock down on defense.
With what transpired at the UCU Invitational, the Lady Dolphins team has improved the ball movement in the half court and we saw them get a lot of uncontested shoots so it will help them kill off their opponents.
JKL Lady Dolphins have only won the league once and that was last season while KCCA Leopards are four time winners of the tournament winning it in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2014.
