As the Uganda Cup winds down, different teams start a scramble for placements. Kyadondo’s Buffaloes and Heathens will battle it out this Friday in a classic derby for third place.
Hima Cement Heathens lost 10-08 to Betway Kobs in the first semifinal at Legends Rugby Grounds last weekend condemning themselves to a third place play off. A non converted try and penalty were not enough to upset Kobs lead.
The Toyota Buffaloes too, were losing semifinalists at Legends, going down 23-09 against the Uganda Cup holders Black Pirates. From being a try away to draw the game and possibly send it to sudden death, their defense opened up and let Ivan Magomu through to score next to the posts and seal the win.
Hima Cement Heathens are reinforced with most of their recruits actually coming from Toyota Buffaloes. The green machine made account of themselves piling the pressure on Kobs last weekend and will look to put away Buffaloes and salvage some dignity, in a competition which they have been finalists for at least the last 9 years. The signing include Jordan Bongomin (Gulu), Trevor Ochan (Rams), Clive Misaga (Impis), Emmanuel Byamugisha (Warriors), Abdul Kiyimba (Stallions), Paul Masendi (Buffaloes), Charles Uhuru (Buffaloes), Simon Olet (Buffaloes), Kevin Kerumundu (Buffaloes), Gerald Sewamkambo (Buffaloes), Paul Epilo (Buffaloes).
Despite the mass exodus to Heathens, Buffaloes, under Coach Edgar Lemerigar have made major strides in such a short while and have thus far made account of themselves in the Uganda Cup. They acquired the services of Stallon Arinaitwe (Rhinos), Uchu Romano (Rams), Pascal Onyango (Stallions), Latoke Aaron (Stallions), Jimmy Wagabaza (Heathens), Mathew Simon Okema (Heathens/Gulu), Marlon Adebua (Gulu), Jonathan Kiryowa (Gulu), Ivan Otema (Stallions), Daniel Odukami (UCU).
The last time these two met in a Uganda cup fixture, Chris Lubanga’s first half penalty was the difference as Heathens won 3-0 to advance to the finals in 2017. They met again in the Premiership and Buffaloes came out on top in both fixtures.
