Champions League: Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns Top Group After Victory

Friday, February 1
Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 ASEC Mimosa

Uganda’s National Football team captain Denis Masinde Onyango was in the posts as Mamelodi Sundowns cruised past The Association Sportive des Employés de Commerce (ASEC) Mimosas.

The Sundowns won their CAF Champions League third round tie 3-1 to top Group A on six points.

Mosa Lebusa headed home the opener off Gaston Sirino’s impressive work but their lead was short lived when Salif Bagate leveled from the spot.

Themba Zwane scored in the second stanza before debutant and new signing Emiliano Tade sealed a commanding victory.

This was the first victory in three overall for Onyango’s Sundowns – The club had lost their last two games against Chippa United (Nedbank Cup) and Amazulu (League).

Sundowns who won the CAF Champions League in 2016, have won two and lost once in this year’s Group A. They lost 2-1 to Nigeria’s Lobi Stars before edging Wydad Casablanca by the same scoreline.

Next for Mamelodi is a home game in the league against Black Leopards on Wednesday before visiting ASEC Mimosas.
