Canada ran over Kenya winning 65-19 while Germany shocked Hong Kong to a 26-9 win and take early leads in the round robin tournament in France.
DTH van der Merwe grabbed a hat-trick of tries, while fullback Theo sauder and Brett Beukenboom each registered a brace among Canada’s ten tries, racing to a humongous 65-19 victory against the second team from the Gold Cup, Kenya. Gordon Mcrobie converted 6 of the 10, and also added a penalty. Kenya’s tries were scored through Leo Seje, George Nyambua and Tony Onyango.
After ending the first half on level terms with 2 penalties apiece, Germany scored 20 points in the second half against Hong Kong’s three. Roslee kicked in all Hong Kong’s points. Germany led the game for the first time, at 48 minutes after Parkinson kicked them 9-6 ahead. Parkinson added another penalty before Germany scored two tries through Schosser and Haupt. Parkinson converted both well to push Germany to a 26-09 win.
The action continues next Saturday, when Hong Kong will look to bounce back against Kenya at 15:00HRS and Canada tackle Germany in a battle of the unbeaten teams at 1800HRS.
The Repechage is last gasp chance for one of Kenya, Canada, Hong Kong and Germany to make it to the Rugby World Cup as the repechage winner. The winner of this round robin tournament shall complete Group B and join defending champions New Zealand, 2007 champions South Africa, Gold Cup winners Namibia and Italy.
