There has been a lot of local rugby and this weekend, the Uganda Rugby Premiership will peep into it’s sixth game with two games: with Walukuba Barbarians hosting Jinja Hippos in a Jinja Derby as Shell Rimula Rhinos visit the MRI Sponsored Rams at the Graveyard in Makerere.
There will only be two games because as the rest of the game have been further due to “unavoidable” circumstances. Legends was meant to host a double header as DusuPay Warriors were to welcome Black Pirates, as Betway Kobs were to host Toyota Buffaloes. Across the road, Hima Cement Heathens were to host the Plascon Mongers. The games have since been postponed to 5th January as the Legends and Kyadondo Rugby are unavailable and unplayable this weekend, hosting private functions.
Barbarians Vs Hippos
After winning the shield, Barbarians won themselves promotion to the league and will be hosting Jinja Hippos at the Abel Dhaira Memorial Stadium in their first Premiership meeting. The two are the only teams yet to register a win in the first games, but the Barbarians have a point from the game against Rams lost within 7 points. Regardless of the fact of that these two teams possess the worst points difference, neither wants to lose. Hippos recently lost a home game (50-03) to Pirates while Barbarians marked their trip to Kyadondo with a 61-06 loss to Buffaloes.
““Yes, it’s a derby and you all know what a derby is. Neither of the teams would love to lose. It is all about the city pride,” said Coach Leonard Lubambula of the Walukuba Barbarians.
“Saturday’s game against Walukuba is going to be tough one because all of us are win-less but I believe I have prepared the boys well to win this game,” said Coach Saidi of the Jinja Hippos.
Rams Vs Rhinos
Rams and Rhinos have a win a-piece and each of them will be looking to put a second win on their score cards. After winning their first game against Walukuba, Rams were back into losing spheres, put to the sword by DusuPay Warriors, losing 24-03 in their own backyard. Rams have struggled for form this season and it is evident in the scores they have been putting up.
Rhinos are in a similar position having won only one game from five played already going into their visit to Rams. Their win came against Jinja Hippos, inspired by Scott Oluoch. Coming from second last season, losing four out of five is not the ideal way to start a league campaign and Rhinos are raring to put their anger onto their next opponent. Rhinos are glad to have back the services of award winning Byron Oketayot in their set up as they try to rebuild their system as they visit Rams.
